Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique sending high-frequency sound waves into the body, with subsequent listening for the echo, which allows real-time image construction. Without any known health risk, it is the preferred radiological technique for evaluating pregnant women, children, and young adults.
Examinations at our ultrasound clinic vary from abdominal and pelvic ultrasound to thyroid ultrasound. More subject to technical limitations than MRI and CT Scan, this medical examination makes it possible to make many diagnostic images.
Doppler is an ultrasound examination that assesses the movement of blood in the vessels. It differs from ultrasound by using the Doppler principle, allowing movement to be identified and characterized. By applying the right parameters, it is possible to identify blockages in the arteries or veins, and thus to diagnose arterial stenosis or thrombosis, or even venous thrombophlebitis.
Ultrasound preparation for the exam depends on the organ to examine. Most ultrasound exams don’t require any preparation other than fasting for the abdominal ultrasound and having your bladder filled for the pelvic ultrasound.
You will therefore need to follow your doctor's recommendations and receive a prescription to do the exam. However, be aware that the ultrasound prescribed by a doctor is covered by the Régie de l'Assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
Ultrasound is a fairly straightforward exam that requires very little preparation. At the time of your ultrasound, and depending on the prescribed exam, we may ask you to put on a gown. This way we make sure to provide you with professional service and create images of unparalleled clarity.
When you are dressed and ready to take the exam, we invite you to make yourself comfortable on our examination table. Then a warmed water-based gel is applied to the skin over the organ to be observed by our experienced technologist or radiologist. The odourless gel serves to evacuate the thin layer of air between the ultrasound probe and the skin, which is essential for obtaining an ultrasound image.
You can move around a bit during the exam, and you will likely be asked to lie on your side or take a few deep breaths. The immobility essential in MRI or computed tomography (CT scan) does not apply to ultrasound. Our ultrasound clinic’s medical staff will move the probe slowly and with ease to capture the best possible images.
The exam itself will only last a few minutes, but your visit may last closer to 30 minutes. Although this exam is done by appointment, your doctor may request an urgent exam and contact us directly when the urgent clinical situation requires it. You will still need a medical prescription.
Our medical staff sometimes work with latex gloves. If you have latex allergies, you should tell us before you sit on the examination table.
